Throughout the history of the series, Proof American Silver Eagles have been offered at different issue prices, in some cases with specified product limits, and have always had different final sales figures.
The initial offering in 1986 was priced at $21.00 per coin and did not carry a product limit. Pricing for Proof Silver Eagles remained relatively stable for the majority of the series, as the market price of silver traded within a narrow range. When silver began to move higher at the end of 2008, this resulted in the cost of the annual offering moving significantly higher. The latest 2011 Proof Silver Eagle will carry a price of $59.95 per coin, nearly triple the cost of the first release.
At various points in the series, the United States Mint has imposed product limits for the individual proof coins. This has ranged from a low of 450,000 units in 1998 to a high of 850,000 units in 2004. After this point, the Mint removed the limits and generally allows each coin to remain available for sale throughout the year of release. The final sales reflect collector demand during the period of availability.
Final sales for individual Proof Silver Eagles have ranged from a low of 372,168 units in 1994, to a high of 1,446,778 for the inaugural year of the series in 1986.

The 10th Anniversary Gold Eagle Set included the one ounce and fractional Proof Gold Eagles for the year, along with a specially issued 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle. Because this coin carried the "W" mint mark, it is considered a separate issue than the individual proof coin issued for the year, which carried the "P" mint mark.
The 1997 Impressions of Liberty Set was issued to celebrate the release of the first American Platinum Eagle. The individually numbered set included one ounce proof versions of the Gold Eagle, Silver Eagle, and Platinum Eagle. The product limit of 5,000 units was a quick sell out.
The 20th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set was issued to mark the important milestone for the series. With a product limit of 250,000 units, the sets included the 2006-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle, 2006 Proof Silver Eagle, and 2006 Reverse Proof Silver Eagle. The latter coin was unique to the set and featured a finish never before used on a United States coins. The entire product limit sold out in a matter of weeks.
