For the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the American Eagle Program, the United States Mint offered the 2006 Reverse Proof Silver Eagle. Besides having a finish not previously used on U.S. coinage, this issue also had a relatively low mintage due to the limited nature of the offering.
On August 21, 2006, the US Mint announced special anniversary sets including Silver Eagles and Gold Eagles in a variety of different finishes. The new types of finishes included an uncirculated coin, which was created by striking coins on specially burnished blanks, and a reverse proof, which had the opposite characteristics of the typical cameo proof coin.
The three-coin 20th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set included one 2006-W Proof Silver Eagle, one 2006-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle, and one 2006-P Reverse Proof Silver Eagle. The sets were priced at $100 and limited to a maximum mintage of 250,000. Despite a household ordering limit of ten sets, the offering sold out in approximately two weeks.
The reverse proof coin features mirrored raised design elements against a frosted background. This is the reverse of the typical arrangement for a modern proof coin. It was offered only within the three-coin set.
After adjustments the final sales of the three-coin set and thus the mintage of the 2006 Reverse Proof Silver Eagle was 248,875. This is the third lowest mintage for a coin of the series after the key date 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle and the coins included in the later 25th anniversary set.
