The overall mintage for the 2006 Proof Silver Eagle reached the highest mintage level since the start of the program. The increased number of coins produced was attributable to the coins included in a specially issued 20th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set.
As customary, the US Mint began sales of individual Proof Silver Eagles early in the year. There was no maximum authorized mintage established and pricing remained the same as the previous year at $27.95 per coin. During the period of availability, total sales of 843,602 were recorded for this individual option.
Adding to the overall mintage were the coins included in a special collector set issued to mark the 20th anniversary of the American Eagle Coin Program. A three coin set limited to 250,000 units included a newly introduced collectible uncirculated version of the Silver Eagle, the 2006 Reverse Proof Silver Eagle, and the standard proof version. The sets sold out after approximately two weeks.
The final adjusted sales of the 20th Anniversary Set were 248,875. Added to the individual sales, yields a final mintage of 1,092,477 for the 2006 Proof Silver Eagle. This represents the second highest total of the series after the 1,446,778 mintage for the 1986 Proof Silver Eagle.
During the year, the price of silver continued its ascent, interrupted by a few significant corrections. Starting the year at a price of $9.00 per ounce, silver rose above $14 before dropping back to $10. A few month moves upward brought the price close to $13 to finish the year.
