As a shift from policy of previous years, the 2005 Proof Silver Eagle was offered by the United States Mint with an unlimited mintage. The maximum authorized mintage had been steadily increased for the past several years, so perhaps it was a natural step to remove the limit completely. The change seemed to have the desired effect with the final sales of 816,663 above the level of the prior year.
The 2005 Proof Silver Eagles were once again minted at the US Mint facility at West Point and carried the "W" mint mark. The coins featured the deep cameo finish that had become the standard for modern proof offerings. The raised design elements were frosted, while the background fields were mirrored, creating a black and white cameo effect.
Pricing for the offering remained at $27.95 each with sales beginning on March 15, 2005. The start of sales came six weeks earlier than the prior year. The Mint cited the earlier release date as part of their efforts to make key products available earlier in the year. The 2005-dated proof Gold Eagles had went on sale in January.
The price of silver rose to levels not seen in decades during the year. After beginning 2005 at the $6.39 per ounce, level, prices rose above the $9.00 level late in the year, to settle at $8.83 per ounce by year end.
