The 2003 Proof Silver Eagle continued the series of popular collector silver bullion coins from the United States Mint. After 17 years, the annual offering had been firmly established in the minds of collectors. At the time, more than 10 million proof Silver Eagles had been sold to the public with the number growing each year.
Designs for the coin included Adolph A. Weinman's depiction of "Walking Liberty" on the obverse. She holds an olive branch in one hand and walks confidently towards a rising sun. The reverse features a heraldic eagle, with a shield at the eagle's breast and olive branch and bundle of arrows in its talons. Thirteen stars appear above, representing the original states.
Sales for the 2003 Proof American Silver Eagle commenced on April 2, 2003, a bit earlier than the previous year. The pricing remained unchanged at $24.00 per coin. Eventually the offering recorded final sales of 747,831 out of the maximum authorized mintage of 750,000 coins.
The price of silver would experience a rise late in the year. After spending eleven months between a range of $4.50 to $5.50 per ounce, the price broke out and reached nearly $6.00 per ounce by the close of the year.
