The 2002 Proof Silver Eagle was the second year that regular production of the popular collector coin took place at the West Point Mint, with the coins bearing the "W" mint mark on the reverse. In earlier years of the series, the coins had been minted in San Francisco and Philadelphia, with mint marks "S" and "P".
Sales for both the Proof Silver Eagle and Proof Gold Eagle began at the United States Mint on June 5, 2002. For this year, the silver coins were priced at $24.00 each and limited to a maximum mintage of 750,000 coins. Each coin was placed within a protective capsule and housed within a velvet lined presentation case with certificate of authenticity.
Breaking with the trend of the past several years, the 2002 Proof Silver Eagle did not achieve a sell out before the following year's coin was released. The final audited mintage figure was 647,342.
During the year, the price of silver ranged from $4.23 to $5.09 per ounce. The annual closing price was $4.665.
