The 2000 Proof Silver Eagle was released by the United States Mint on May 15, 2000. The coin marked off another century with the classic depiction of Liberty walking towards a rising sun holding a bouquet of olive branches with an American flag draped around her shoulders.
Continuing a trend now several years in the running, the US Mint raised the maximum mintage limit for the popular offering and collectors eagerly purchased the entire allotment. The 2000 Silver Eagle Proof Coin was limited to 600,000 coins and carried a price of $24 per coin. The final confirmed mintage following adjustments was 600,743, quite a bit higher than the established limit.
The Acting Director of the United State Mint John P. Mitchell said, "Renowned as classics of American design, the Proof Eagles rank among the most admired and sought after coins in the world."
Indeed the coins would continue their reign of popularity that reached back to the release of the initial 1986 Proof Silver Eagle.
During 2000, the price of silver fell into a slow but steady decline, taking the price per ounce from $5.30 to $4.57.
