As the world waited to see what the new millennium would bring, the 1999 Proof Silver Eagle continued the popular series of collector coins in typical fashion. The collectible proof version of the American Silver Eagle bullion coin had been issued each year without fail since 1986. The present issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint with the "P" mint mark.
The mintage limit for the offering was increased from the prior year by 100,000, making a total of 550,000 coins available for collectors. Pricing remained unchanged at $24.00 per coin. Sales for the popular Gold and Silver Eagle offerings commenced on April 30, 1999.
A sell out of the full maximum authorized mintage was achieved and the mintage following adjustment was 549,330. The coins were packaged in plastic capsules fitted within velvet lined cases. A certificate of authenticity signed by the Director of the United States Mint was also included.
The price of silver experienced a range bound price during 1999, bouncing between a low of $4.90 and a high of $5.70 per ounce. The price began the year at $4.99 and closed the year at $5.33.
