Created to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the series, the 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle represents an important key date coin and rarity. The circumstances of the coin's issuance resulted in an extremely limited mintage of just 30,125. This is by far, the lowest figure for any Proof Silver Eagle.
The coins were issued as part of the 10th Anniversary Gold Eagle Proof Set. The five coin set included the one ounce, one half ounce, one quarter ounce, and one tenth ounce 1995 Proof Gold Eagles and an the additional 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle. The later coin carried the "W" mint mark representing the West Point Mint, rather than the "P" mint mark for Philadelphia carried by the standard version of the coin. This served to create an instant rarity for anyone who had purchased the expensive set, which was originally priced at $999.00.
The price of the 1995-W Silver Eagle has risen significantly, with examples typically changing hands for around $3,000 each. At times, this single coin has been valued in excess of the other four gold coins included in the rest of the set.
The creation of such a low mintage Proof Silver Eagle is something unlikely to be repeated. A distant second in terms of lowest mintage was the 2006 Reverse Proof Silver Eagle issued for the 20th anniversary of the series. This coin was produced to a maximum authorized mintage of 250,000 coins.
