The series entered its tenth year of release with the 1995 Proof Silver Eagle. After the extremely low mintage experienced in the prior year, demand and mintages for the one ounce silver coins staged a mild increase. The final audited mintage for this issue came in at 407,822.
The coins were stuck at the Philadelphia Mint and carried the "P" mint mark on the reverse to the left of the eagle's tail feathers.
In standard fashion, the US Mint sold the 1995 Proof Silver Eagles to collectors individually, with the price set at $23.00 per coin. The coins came packaged in clear capsules fitted into velvet cases. An outer cardboard box housed the case along with a certificate of authenticity signed by the Director of the Mint.
As a change from previous years, an additional proof version of the coins was minted for collectors. The 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle was produced only for inclusion within a special 5 coin 10th Anniversary Gold Eagle Set. Importantly, this coin carried the "W" mint mark, as opposed to the "P" mint mark on the regular version of the coin, creating an important rarity.
During the year, the price of silver broke through the key $5.00 per ounce level and quickly extended above $6.00. The price subsequently gell back into the low $5.00 range and closed the year at $5.14 per ounce.
