Sales of the 1993 Proof Silver Eagle languished, even as the spot price of silver marked significant gains during the year. Out of the United States Mint's maximum authorized mintage of 550,000 coins, just 393,224 individual coins were sold. This represented a decline of more than 100,000 coins from the prior year.
For the first time, the proof version of the Silver Eagle was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, accordingly the coins carried the "P" mint mark. For previous years, the coins had been struck at the San Francisco Mint. The switch happened to coincide with the bicentennial of the Philadelphia Mint, which prompted a special set to be produced.
The Philadelphia Set included the one ounce 1993 Proof Silver Eagle and the one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce 1993 Proof Gold Eagles. These four coins were packaged in a special presentation case along with a silver medal, which depicted some of the historic coins produced at the Philadelphia Mint. These sets were priced at $499.00 each and sold 12,689 units. Added to the individual sales, the 1993 Proof Silver Eagle had an overall mintage of 405,913.
During 1993, the price of silver experienced a multi-month run, which would bring the price from $3.70 per ounce to more than $5.00 by August. After a dip in price back to $3.90 per ounce with the low reached in mid-September, silver finished the year at $5.11.
