The 1990 Proof Silver Eagle was released during another down year for the price of silver. The drop in silver did not have a detrimental impact on sales of the collector coin, with total sales reaching their highest level since 1987.
This was the first year that the United States Mint included a production limit for the Proof Silver Eagle, which may have led to the elevated sales levels. By setting the maximum mintage at 700,000, a level just above the prior year's total sales, some collectors may have been inspired to buy the coin as sales closed in on the sell out level.
Once again the 1990 American Silver Eagle Proof Coins were produced at the San Francisco Mint facility. The coins carry the "S" mint mark on the reverse of the coin to the left of the eagle's tail feathers.
Coins were available for sale to the public directly from the United States Mint, priced at $23.00 each. This was the same price level that had been in place since 1987. The coins were included in a protective plastic capsule. The capsule was placed in a purple velvet display case and outer cardboard box, along with a certificate of authenticity.
The price of silver began 1990 at $5.21 per ounce and remained within a tight range for much of the year, before experiencing a decline of about $1.00 during the autumn months. Silver ended the year at $4.19 per ounce.
