In addition to the bullion version of the coin, the United States Mint issued the collectible 1989 Proof Silver Eagle. This coin had become a new annual tradition, offered to collectors along with the traditional Proof and Mint Sets. For the proof coin's fourth year of issue, the mintage was 617,694, representing an increase in sales from the prior year.
The 1989 American Silver Eagle Proof Coin features the classic Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman, originally used for the circulating half dollar from 1916 to 1947. The reverse of the coin featured a heraldic eagle designed by John Mercanti specifically for the new series. As with prior issues, each coin contained one ounce of .999 fine silver, with a legal tender face value of one dollar.
The proof coins were minted at the San Francisco Mint and coins carry the "S" mint mark on the reverse.
The pricing for the coins remained unchanged from the prior year at $23 per coin. The coins were offered for sale by the US Mint directly to collectors, packaged in a protective plastic capsule, velvet display case and outer storage box, with a certificate of authenticity signed by the Director of the United States Mint.
The prevailing price of silver fell during the year. In January, prices peaked around $6.20 per ounce, before experiencing an extended decline into the summer months. A spike in November brought prices back towards $6, but the price eventually closed the year at $5.22 per ounce.
