Following a very successful inaugural year, the 1987 Proof Silver Eagle was offered as the second issue of an ongoing series of collectible proof versions of the American Silver Eagle bullion coin. The obverse design of the coins featured the beautiful rending on Liberty Walking originally designed by Adolph A. Weinman for the circulating half dollar series. The reverse design featured a heraldic eagle with scroll, designed by John Mercanti for the new silver bullion coin series.
The 1987 Proof American Silver Eagles were sold by the United States Mint directly to the public at a cost of $23.00 per coin. This represented a $2 increase over the price charged in the prior year. The coins were offered without an established maximum mintage and sold 904,732 units during the period of availability. This was down from the robust figures experienced in 1986. The level of sales declined from the robust figures, but still ranks as the third highest total considered all years that the Proof Silver Eagle has been offered to date.
Packaging for the coins was similar to the prior year, with the coins fitted into a plastic capsule and placed within a velvet case and outer cardboard box with a certificate of authenticity.
During the 1987 calendar year, the price of silver ranged from a low of $5.36 per ounce to a peak price of $9.44 per ounce, briefly reached in April.
